Description
In 1918, at the time of the Spanish flu there were so many casualties each day that the horse-drawn corpse transports were no longer sufficient. At night, the coffins were placed in the carriages of the streetcar (line nr 71), which was already electrified. Public tram line 71 still operates today and leads the way to the Zentralfriedhof Vienna.
Furthermore the Zentralfriedhof is home to many native animals and until the mid-1980s was an official hunting ground with its own forest population that was controlled by a hunter appointed by the forestry administration.
